What is a Compassion in Action Sponsor?

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, hit severely by recent natural disasters and years of civil war and unrest. Many of the children in this country are undernourished and few have educational opportunities. By your desire to come alongside Compassion in Action and support a child in need, your sponsorship commitment will help provide your child with an education, nutritious food and access to medical attention. Most important, your sponsored child will be shown the love of Christ and will grow up learning how to serve Him and to serve others.

What specifically will my child receive through my sponsorship?

They will learn about Jesus Christ. As part of the core curricula, your child will have the opportunity to learn how to trust Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Education. Your child will have the opportunity to learn and develop their higher level thinking skills in the areas of math, language arts, social studies, music, art and science in a small classroom setting. The majority of public schools in Nicaragua are overcrowded (80 students per classroom), where higher levels of thought are not encouraged. Because of this, students enter society with an poor understanding of their situation and do not have the cognitive ability to rise out of poverty.

Physical care. Your child will be given periodic medical examinations including vision screening and dental checkups. If there are medical concerns, he or she will be attended to either by medical teams from the United States or from reputable medical staff in Nicaragua. In addition, your child will be given a well-balanced school lunch every day. This might be the only meal he or she will receive that day.

School supplies. Your child will receive a set of school supplies to function well in school as well as a school uniform, socks and a pair of shoes. (Uniforms and shoes supplied on a needs basis).

Communication with your child

We encourage you to write to your child at least two times a year (maybe Birthday and Christmas). Sharing your life, and showing how much you care for them brings them a great deal of hope and encouragement. You can do so by emailing your letters to Compassion in Action and we will have them translated and delivered to the child you support. In addition, you can send a personal or family photo via this email. Your child will write to you at least one time per year.

Gifts for your child

Compassion in Action encourages sponsors to give additional monetary gifts to the general fund for things such as birthday celebrations, field trips, teacher training, eye glasses and the construction of the new high school. At this time we are unable to take down personal care packages to your child, but are working towards making this happen in the near future.

Keeping you up to date

Compassion in Action will be publishing periodic newsletter updates via our web site. We also encourage you to pray about partnering together with us during a short term visit, so that you can meet your child face to face, and receive a blessing from the Lord as you interact with your child and his or her family.
